Avalanche of events for Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009 announced

120 art and culture projects and over 900 events to run in 2009.

On 28 October 2008, Vilnius is introducing the national programme “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009” with nearly 120 unique projects, more than 900 events and the message to the world: Vilnius – European capital of culture opens the gate to the country which celebrates its name millennium.

“Next year is 365 important steps to create a new experience of European culture in Vilnius. In 2009, many places in Vilnius will feature international projects affecting many daily lives. The prestigious status of European capital of culture is the excellent opportunity to change ourselves and others. We’ll try to make use of all opportunities and to show Vilnius as a lively city open to people and to new initiatives,” says Elona Bajorinienė, Director of PI Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009.

600 events for free

The national programme “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009” consists of 6 thematic fields: “Special Events”, which will include 16 projects next year, “Conferences and Conventions” (12 projects), “European Art Programme” (45 projects), “Culture (Re)Discovery Programme” (13 projects”, “Living History Programme” (16 projects), and “People Programme” (16 projects).

“The programme is intended for different audiences including gourmets of various arts, devoted lovers of specific genres and the general public. Plans are to implement nearly 120 projects, 90 per cent of which are premieres in Lithuania and 80 per cent are run in co-operation with artists from round the globe. Ten projects including Hamlet by Oskaras Koršunovas and co-production of opera Love and Other Demons by Peter Eötvös are co-financed by Lithuania and other countries”, Bajorinienė said.

Vilnius residents and visitors will be invited to over 900 events, two thirds being free of charge.“The outcomes of European capital of culture will step beyond the end of 2009. These include new infrastructural objects: the National Art Gallery, the multifunctional culture centre “Art Printing House” and works of art by the country's most prominent sculptors on the bank of Neris River.

We hope to develop new cultural traditions such as Lithuanian capital of culture elections, LUX Festival of Lights, Street Musician Day and "Let There be Night!" and to contribute to the creation of 11 new pieces of music to be living far beyond 2009. This is only part of the substantial contribution to the cultural life not only in Vilnius, but also throughout Lithuania,” Bajorinienė said.

From professionals to young talents

Partners of the national programme include both Lithuania’s most important institutions for culture (Lithuanian Art Museum, Lithuanian National Philharmonic, Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, Contemporary Art Centre, etc.) or globally recognised Lithuanian artists (Oskaras Koršunovas, Arūnas Matelis etc.) and young creators (Linas Kutavičius, Julijonas Urbonas etc.) or newly emerging culture institutions (Kultfluxas, etc.).

What is more, co-operation involves influential foreign networking organisations (European Festival Association (EFA), International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts (IETM) etc.) and the most famous troupes (St Petersburg Maria Theatre, London Symphony Orchestra, the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA), etc.).Prompted to take active part in the projects ("My yard/art yard", People Programme Foundation, etc.), Vilnius local communities and different social groups also play an important role.

SOOO, VISIT US!!! :)

Some news, ...

Hi Dudes,

I'm just taking few minutes to write a post here.

I graduated (or almost because the graduation party is in few days) so now the University is over and I'm working as an engineer. To be precise, I'm now working in Xerox as a consultant. It'll change soon because I'll not have a land job but I'm gonna be a consultant being here and there and meeting clients.

I now live in the center of Paris (near Place de Clichy for those who know what it is) in a cool flat and I'm doing sport because of the 4 stairs (without elevator of course).

Past summer, I went to Crete and also to Vilnius where I met Laura. I'm tiding my pictures so it's not possible to see them at the moment.

Ok that's it (for the moment)

bye

Toulouse!

Hello everybody, how are you going? I'm sure all of you are great :) hope so at least!!

Well, it is just a "small" message in which u'll know a bit of my life :)

So as I had said in a previous message, I passed my exams, and just after I did a training (3 months) in a Law Firm. It was really interesting because I was working on what I prefer: international law... But well, 3 months is quite long and I was happy to finish in August.

Then I had 1 month of vacation, and here I am: in Toulouse. In fact I applied in different universities in France, and I lastly chose Toulouse, because their project seems to me more interesting & serious.

I had my first meeting yesterday, 4 hours of boring speeches hehe. But the good point is that we went, with the other students from my master ( we are 37) in a bar, for making links between us :) It was really cool, i felt a bit as in Sofia hehe. But the beer is much more expensive, even during "happy hours" :D

So that's all for now! I'll be in Toulouse at least till April, and then i have another trainee. I hope to find a cool one (abroad if possible) but well.. not so easy :D So if somebody wanna come, just tell me! The city looks very beautiful (I will post here some pics about :) )

Good luck to everyone!!! See u later.

Sebo

PS: Jerome, i'm still waiting for your special message, here, in the blog ... hehe

PPS: what about the others ( Nacho, Jesus, David, Thomas, Laura...), we do not have so much news from you!! Let us know if you are still doing ok, please!!

Edit: oh i forgot, i did a second concert, with my band (Somnium) in september, here are some photos! Was cool :)

Hello from real lawyer... :))

Hey guys! How are you all? I hope quite fine. I was planing to write you quite long time ago, but didn't manage to sit at the computer after work for longer time at home... :)) Well - news from me. Finally I finished stupid law. So now I'm bachelor of law. Down here you can see some fotos from the ceremony. It's quite funny. In my university you always have to dress in these tunicas. As Thomas already said to me - we look quite stupid, but at the same time it's a big celebration, so it's cool be be dress "diferentlly" - not like every day.

What else - now I'm aplying to some new stuff. University the same, but I will study master. It's a shit, because it's more expensive then bachalor studies. Much more expensive - but... I have to... :) Mmm... Maybe I even want to - a little... :))

My work is OK. My personal life is OK. Summer is still not very much in Lithuania. As most of you know - I will go to Cuba in August. And... And nothing more special... :) Just normal life. I saw Carlos few weeks ago. He's the same. Said good wishes to all of you! And also he said, that even if he's not in contact a lot with you all - he's still missing Erasmus people. AND, one more thing - I also saw Mario last week - he also finished unviersity! :)) So, he did what he had to do one year ago - after comming back from Erasmus... :))

So, such news from cold Lithuania... :)) Kiss! I miss you all very much! :))

In fact i'm doing researching for the attorney, when he is not sure or wants more details!! Oh and i'm also the official translator in English hehe. That is really funny, today i sent a mail to an american association for business :D Lucky I am no? but no worry, even if i only write in English for now... i do not forget about the pronunciation... the most important thing, remember?

The last news of this post is about my band: we 're gonna do a concert for "la fête de la musique" (music party in the whole country on the 21st of June) in my small town hehe!! All of you are invited of course ;-)
